BOBCAT 642 GAS 1.6lt ford gas flooding the old carb and the new carb

Can you post the timing procedure for the 1.6 742. I have the same problem.

The distributor nut is a pain for sure
 
Here's the specs from the manual. Also, you shouldn't have to loosen the distributor bolt. There should be a screw holding the distributor tight. Mine can be seen at the bottom of the distributor through the fan belt.

with gravity feed I heard somewhere that for about every 18 inchs of height you can get about 1 psi of pressure,that was most likely water not gas, but maybe close enough to make a guess.
Your engine fuel pump if good should do the trick.

when I was a kid ( 55 to 57 years ago) my dad had a brass float get a hole in it and he took it off and shook it and could hear liquid sloshing around in it he drilled a hole in the top of it and got the fuel out and resoldered it, he had to try it a couple of times and sand down the solder and readjust the float to get it to work, the hardest part of soldering up a float is the whole tube pice needs to be heated close to the soldering point temperature so you dont have air trying to escape causing a pin hole in the solder, heating and cooling will allow a leaking float to draw in fuel causing it to water log and not float.
 
also I think dad tested it after it was cooled to room tempture by putting it in hot tap water which was about 145F heat from the water expands the air inside the float and it escapes out the leaking point
 
So she’s back and running better than ever!
I adjusted the timing by sound because it was easy and fast. I’m sure I’ll disappoint a few but it is what it is. I got it warmed up and set throttle to like half and then turned the distributor by hand small increments at a time. Once she purred nicely it was done.

So all in all the carb was replaced, the ignition system except the distributor, and I adjusted the timing.

Great news. I love my old 642. Dead reliable and darn easy to work on.
 
I had a 642 back in the day and I was told early on my a bobcat mechanic that this engine has fussy points. He was correct, every time it was running rough I headed straight for the points and it would usually fix it. If I recall, the gap is .020 (maybe .025).

Either way, Im glad your machine is running once again, especially in the winter when we really rely on them.

Completely agree.... Went to an electronic ignition and then that weirdness went away.
