Bought a learning project for me and my boys. Cleaning it and just put in a starter. Engine moves but missing the 2 glowplugs.

ANY idea of what type of glowplug to install?
Can't find anything despite a lot of searching and ChatGPT.

Have the manual (happy to share all 190 pages). But it doesn't say the size or part number of the plugs.
Any ideas?

Here is a link to the parts catalog:

You should at least be able to find the Bobcat number and then do a search on the internet for a current plug.

Tom,
you don't have any old ones to compare?
I found this description on B6000 glow plugs...maybe a start...

I'l try that Tlawdogg. Thank you for the help.

BrdgBldr, I tried to put in the serial number a bunch of different ways, but no luck. Stamp attached. Maybe it's a "Clark" issue?

I'm interested in hearing how you go with getting the old engine running. With no glow plugs, i'd be concerned with corrosion inside, but you hopefully will be lucky.

If you're in australia, i can help you out, freight to over seas generally exceeds what the parts cost. I believe the ZB600 is the same as a z600, so if you can find plugs to suit the Z600 they should be a match.

I've resorted to buying a new engine if that's what it comes to. I believe the learning for my boys in the overall project is worth it…..Will post what happens.

Great, do keep us informed. These are the things that turn good boys into great men.
Keep it up and enjoy the time, it goes too fast!

As for the oniine parts catalog, remove the "M" from the serial number when entering it. I have the same problem with my '84 743. Good luck!

@brdgbldr, that worked, but looks like my model is too old (12095)
Originally didn't see that link on the site.

Question Diesel Electricity (2 cylinder)
THANKS for the help finding the glowplugs.

The schematics call for a diode before the glowplugs , connected to the starter.....
Done a lot of searching....read, watched videos....but not clear answer. Figured I'd ask you all for some help.

Just put any diode that's 12v rated???...get one rated to 30a (just guessing here)?
If so, what direction? Am I blocking electricity from going TO or FROM the plugs when the starter initiates?

Took physics and chemistry in college but this diesel thing is fooling me.

And some updated pics: hoses and stickers
Tom

normally the diode is to the glow plug solenoid, it provides power to the glow plugs while you crank, and not just when you turn the key to the left. That little extra glow helps with starting those old engines. If the diode was not there, and it was just a wire, when you go to glow, your engine would crank too.

I'm not sure how much success you will have getting a new engine for it, these engines are in lighting towers and marine generators mostly, in a skid steer, you need vairable speed and not fixed gen spec you would likely get.

We would rebuild 5-10 of these every year, parts are still available. If you wanted to teach your boys about engines, with guidance,an engine rebuild would be pretty good, they are a fairly simple engine.

Appreciate all the help.
@Tlawdogg, called Bobcat store. "we don't have it and it's not made anymore" They didn't have an alternative suggestions either. UGH. They guy suggested "radio shack"....wait it's 2024....
@Tazza, appreciate your post and the education. Now it makes sense.

CHATgpt.....asked it:
With these considerations in mind, a suitable diode could be the 1N5408. It's a general-purpose diode with a maximum repetitive reverse voltage of 1000V, an average forward current of 3A, and a low forward voltage drop

...asked about raising the amperage
Using a diode with a higher forward current rating than the expected current drawn by the glow plugs can offer additional safety margin and prevent the diode from being stressed close to its maximum limits

Bought a 10A package.
Knowing that CHATgpt has never touched an engine, seem reasonable?

Giving away 19 free diodes if this works

Very exciting evening.......you can see in my eyes....thought it was going to start.

Guessing it's been sitting for years.
Changed the fuel.
New Gloplugs (thank you @Tlawdogg)
Redid a lot of the wiring (thank you @Tazza)
Wouldn't be this far this fast without all your help.
Glowplug are hot and working.
New fuel in the tank and the fuel pump seems to be pumping
Heated the plugs for >1minute....

Anyone have any auditory skills that help with a diagnosis?
We gave up after a lot of tries (starter got too hot)

Tom

Start with the basics. Is the Fuel being actually delivered?
Did you get any "Smoke", if so What color? Did you do a Compression check on the cylinders?
Did you try a "puff" of ether (starting fluid) ?

I'm leaning towards giving it a snort of ether too.

Another thing you can try, is take the glow plugs out, give each cylinder one or two squirts of oil, put them back in and try it again. If it fires up, you likely have worn cylinders or stuck rings.

If you can get it running and the issue is rings, if they are stuck from sitting, they may free up

I see smoke, it looks white to me, if that is correct, i'd lean towards compression.

Have you checked the injectors too? Start with the above first, if that doesn't work, look at your injectors. Pull them out, hook the lines up so you can put your injectors on outside the engine and crank, see if they give a narrow spray or not. If they do, they are fine
