853 leaks while sitting

Well it's been almost exactly a year since I picked up my bobcat. I fixed all of the major problems with it and used it this summer to dig up two driveways. It's an early 90s (1992 I think) 853G from what I read. So when I got the machine it had a hydraulic leak that turned out to be a leaking fitting on one of the large hoses coming off the back of the pump. Here's my issue now- I can use the machine all day no problems. Can use it for a week straight no problem. Let it sit for awhile- like a month or more- and the hydraulic tank is very low. It's not totally empty but it's low enough it's off the dipstick. I tried looking at the machine last week but it had gotten rain in there couldn't see anything. So today I hauled it out to my storage building for the winter. It's dry so I plan to let it sit for a week or two then go out and dig around looking for a leak. Just looking for ideas of what could be leaking down while sitting?

So, you can't see any evternal leaks?
If not, it's leaking into your chain case. The case drain filters are plugged up creating back pressure or the drive motor carrier seals are bad alloing fluid to be pumped into the chain case.
Sitting on flat ground, remove the plug at the front of the chain case, oil should be to the base of the threads. If it's over full, oil will come out.

Ok this plug at the front, I assume I have to lift the cab to access it? Honestly I don't know where the leak is. I still have some oil inside the machine, so it may be a hose/fitting somewhere inside the machine leaking. It's just hard to find because it's leaking so little.

The chain case drain plug is outside at the front of the machine, down low. No need to raise the cab. About a 1" diameter pipe plug with an internal 1/2" square hole. Use a 1/2" ratchet extension to unscrew it. You'll likely need to raise the lift arms a foot or two to access it. Don't forget to put a log under the bucket so it doesn't decide to pin your arms between the bucket and the frame. :) ---Bobbie-G

My 751 was doing the same thing. It turned out the case drain hose from the control valve to the tank had been chaffing and had a small hole. I found it after giving the machine a good clean. Adam.
