Hello everyone, I just purchased a bobcat 610 about 2 weeks ago and have just about got everything fixed on it. I was wondering if someone could tell me what I need to check if my variable speed wont stay were I put it, if I push the lever forward to go faster the pulley moves in just fine but it wont stay there it goes right back out, almost like a check valve are something is sticking. I have ordered the big O-rings that go on the gland but they haven't come in yet. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Angus……I think I addressed a very similar issue recently so this answer will be about the same. Typically, what I find when this happens is that one of the O-rings or the seal inside the "root-swivel" assembly has failed. There are two O-rings on the gland (one inside and one outside), one O-ring on the shaft, one very small O-ring and the 'seal' (pt #6516301) inside the shaft……any one of these parts fail at all and the sheave will not stay in "high". Extremely rarely have I had an issue with the "variable speed valve". There are two types of valves……one with and one without a 'thermal relief'……could be an issue but again, I just have not seen them to be the problem.

thanks for the reply 6brnorma, that's kinda what I was leaning towards also, this machine had set up outside for about 4 years. I took the sheave apart and put a o-ring inside the gland, there was not a o-ring in there. this old 610 has been neglected but I have just about got her back in decent shape. I have wanted one of these all my life and I got lucky and got this one for $500 bucks. I will post up some pictures when I get it out of my shop. thanks again!

After you rebuild the assembly…..use some emery cloth to clean any burrs or sharp edges from the lock ring groove inside the sheave, clean throughly, lube and then use PVC to punch the assembly back into the sheave (forget the size right off hand). Do not use anything metal to put it back in place…..you will destroy the gland.

yes I will do that 6brnorma, I don't have any leaks at the sheave, do you normally rebuild the swivel itself? I see it has some mighty little parts in there. thanks

If I am having the issue you described, I always rebuild the entire "root-swivel" assembly. So….I would replace all O-rings, wiper seal in gland, the seal inside 'root-swivel' assembly if it is damaged in any way and the bearings if they show signs of failure. All parts are available through Bobcat and most are inexpensive. Bearings have gone up to $35.00 each and the Swivel is now about $125.00 but should not need replacement. They did sell a "repair" kit (pt #6505780) and a "seal" kit (pt #6661441) ….. I have never bought either one as most of the time there are parts included in the "repair" kit that do not need replacement. I have never checked the price……maybe it would be cheaper to purchase the kit. My advice would be to buy extra O-rings……they're cheap and it is easy to damage them during reassembly.

Also angus……..I NEVER reuse old snap rings ….. failure of any one of the four in this rebuild and the machine will be down……..very cheap investment.

I agree 6brnorma, I ordered new snap rings along with the O-rings for the gland, but I did not order anything for the root assembly. thanks

Be sure to clean out the cast grouve inside the outer sheve there are two holes that let the oil out befor it can get on the belt . this gets pluged up with grease from the splines . Gearbox

Hello everyone, well I installed new O-rings on the gland and new snap rings and the variable speed works in and out very smoothly now but it will still leak back to slow speed. so I guess I will order the swivel root O-rings and have a look in there. thanks
