610 engine rebuild and lift/tilt control valve fix up.

Just to clarify. In the pic above, the Permatex isn't structurally holding the housing together. Its just retaining the oil seal.
Couple of things I see that might help. First….I would turn the two bolts around that hold the housing to the block. It is impossible to remove them should it be necessary for some reason once fully assembled and installed in the machine as you currently have them. Second…..I'd do the same with the distributor "locking" nut/bolt……it is easier/safer to operate the screw driver away from the engine rather then near the coupler.
Also….I have a number of spare parts for that coupler should you need them…..let me know.

LOL……..never mind…..after a second look I see you already have the shroud mounted. You will be one unhappy camper if you ever strip those bolts and need to replace them…….speaking from experience.

6brnorma... advice taken. I was more concerned about removing the nuts at a later date but a stripped thread would be more of problem so I've switched the bolts around now.
Unicam... I presume you are referring to the mess the pistons are in in the pics at the top. In my case I think this was just caused by excessive heat and bad lubrication. A guy I met who has worked on lots of these said its always piston no 4 thats the first to go because its in the back corner and gets the worst airflow. In my case, it didnt even have a cooling cover over that side so it was doomed to fail. (I've noticed also that Wisconsons instructions for the fitting of an optional temp cut-out says to fit it near piston 4).
On top of that I think the lubrication on this was minimal. The oil was low when I got the engine and what was in there was like tar. I've mentioned elsewhere that I think the lube system of these engines is pretty dodgy at the best of times. I'm probably lucky that more serious heat damage wasn't done.

If you switch those over to 'flanged' nuts…….they are easy to handle even when engine is fully assembled.

Its finally alive again!
It looks old on the outside but its all new on the inside. Bored out to 40 thou oversize, new pistons, rings, shells, valve guides, and numerous other bits and pieces. I finally got her started today and it sounded pretty good considering it has no muffler. I only ran it for a minute or two as I have no cooling tinware attached. (In fact I am missing a few bits that I have to fabricate).
I should have taken a pic of all the plastic bags I had parts in. I had about 25 of them and I labelled everything as i removed it, no matter how 'obvious' it was. I thoroughly recommend you do this if you are planning a job like this. When an engine has been in pieces for 6 months its easy to forget what things are for. Especially all the various bolts.
I had to drill and fit helicoil threads for about 8 of the head bolts, so if anyone wants to know about that, now's the time to ask.
One last minute problem I had was with the starter. It 'sounded' like the starter was spinning without the pinion engaging. But in fact the pinion WAS engaging but it was jamming against far end of the starter housing causing the ring gear to lock solid while the starter shaft kept rotating. Its a bit hard to explain, but a few extra washers in the right place and some grease seems to have fixed it.

I've mentioned previously how skeptical I am about the lubrication system on these things. Well after having totally dismantled, then rebuilt it, I am now even more dubious. So much so that I have added additional oil lines to the top of the engine to use as a pre-oiling system prior to start-up. You can see in the pic below the braided lines running into each of the 4 valve chambers. For now I am simply using an oil can to pump oil into the hose. From there the oil drips down directly onto the crank shaft where it will be thrown around with the first rotation of the crank and will lubricate the cylinder bores and cam much quicker than waiting for the internal system to do its job. When the engine is installed I'll be adding either an electric or hand pump to circulate oil from the sump for a minute or two prior to start-up. One thing I discovered while prepping the engine is that the oiling system simply does not work satisfactorily at 'cranking' speed. Theres just not enough pressure being developed to spray oil via the internal jets. At cranking speed it simply dribbles out. So, if you are cranking a hard starting engine, its basically running 'dry' unless its been used regularly and thers a residual film of oil on everything.
This also means that the oil filter takes a long time to fill up and provide back pressure. So if you rebuild one of these donks and fit a new filter its a really, really good idea to pre-fill the oil filter. And of course make sure you oil everything really well as you assemble it. I used 90 weight gear oil on most things.

Thing looks like it's ready for NASCAR…… I always 'preload' the oil filter but I hate the "Bobcat" filter design. I use an old bobcat 'oil bath' filter bracket that was mounted on the engine. I mount a Universal Spin on filter on the bracket and don't spill a drop of oil when changing oil. Plus it all comes out with the engine when you RR and don't have all that crap on the side wall to deal with. I also hate the manual fuel pumps…..I throw that set up away, cap off the block and use an electric pump instead. If you are interested in part numbers let me know. Great job…..wish you were closer…I'd put you to work.

6brnorma... Whats the advantage of the electric fuel pump? Is it just simplicity and reliability, or does the engine start and run better?
This mechanical pump seems to be working OK, but if you have a number handy for an electric pump I'll take it and see what it will cost over here. Whats the recommended pump pressure?

The older mechanical pumps have a high rate of failure and especially 'vapor lock'…..the electric pump will eliminate those issues. It is easy to switch out at any time so in your case I wouldn't necessarily go electric unless you begin to have problems. This application calls for 2-3 lbs PSI….there are a number of pumps in that range but I HIGHLY recommend the Carter pt#P60504….about $35.00 to $50.00 on E-bay with free shipping (don't know about Australia)….it is a 2 - 4 PSI pump. I've had excellent success with this pump.

Will the additional oil lines that you've installed to the top end reduce the pressure to the 'spray' bar below? I'm asking because I don't know the answer….will it create a larger issue then what you feel you have in an already low oil psi engine? Just wondering out loud.

My oil line is completely separate to the existing system. At the moment I am just using a small manual oil can to pump oil into the hose to pre-lube through the valve chambers. Ultimately the plan is to draw oil from the sump somehow, (maybe via the 'spare' dip stick hole thats on the other side of the engine) and use an installed manual or electric oil pump for a minute prior to start-up.

Its been a while but here's something for 'all' the 610 enthusiasts. (Or should I say 'the other' 610 enthusiast). I finally got around to painting the frame. Everything was removed and painted separately before reinstalling. After taking this pic I reinstalled the half shafts and driven sheave. Next job is to reinstall the engine.

Heres how I fixed the swivel bearings in place. First I drilled a couple of shallow holes into the shafts. Then I got some 7/16 UNF bolts and cut off a piece of thread about 3/4 of an inch long. (This is the same thread as in the Alan head set screws). I cut a screwdriver slot in one end of the thread and screwed it firmly into the bearing. Finally I threaded on a 7/16 nut and a spring washer to lock it in place. (Theres 2 of these on each bearing). This pic overemphasizes the size of the nut. Its actually pretty neat and allows the bearing to swivel nicely. These are not strictly the correct bearings for the job, but I had them, so I want to try this first. Time will tell but they seem pretty secure to me. It was a pretty easy fix. The hardest part was working out exactly where to drill the shafts.

Today was a good day. The engine is back in at last. I feel like I'm on the home stretch at last.
