2005 john deere 317 shuts off after about 3 aexonds

My 317 cranks over buts shuts off after 3 seconds.

Does it start then shut down?
Only 3 seconds sounds like it could be an RPM sensor? not sure if they are fitted to this model, but it's somewhere to start.
Have you tried calling the dealer and talking to their service department to see if they have any clues?

my CT322 did this and it turned out there is a security mode that got tripped once when unit accidently shut off when someone bumped the lever when entering the cab with the unit running. If you have a display check to see if it shows a LOCKA or B displaying. if it does you need to enter your security code to allow unit to run.
