Hello All. I found a barn find. A 99 2040 mustang 403 org hours. Got it from the family. Problem is when I start it she purrs. Unfortunately if I let the key go it shuts off. Will stay running if I'm holding the key. Help me keep this baby going. What should I look at?

First thing I would do is change out the ignition switch.

Check the fuses, they will do that if u have a blown or corroded fuse, the control module is not getting power causing it to not stay running unless key is held on start position, the fuse is located in the front bank not sure of the 4 it is

Hi, I will take a look at it a bit closer this evening and return with my findings.
I did inspect the fuses and they were good and clean. I'll pull the plastic off and check the wires behind the fuse panel next. It's just the 4 fuses to the left if you were sitting in the seat correct? And then the main breaker in the engine compartment?

I do have a donor machine that I can take parts off of. I have a 97 2070 that starts. Just has other issues. So if you have any other suggestions let me know. I see you answer questions often so I was hoping for you to be one of the people to respond. Thank you!

check the fuel solenoid if it is a 3 wire you have a pull circuit and a hold circuit quite often the hold side will burn out as it has the longest service use, giving the start then die when you let off the key, the pull circuit is wired to the start and the hold is wired to the ingintion side.

ok it should have 8 fuses total (2 four bank fuse holders), there are only 5 of the 8 fuses used for operation the other 3 are for accessories. directly to the left of the fuses is the control module (brains of the loader) is mounted. check to see if it has LED lights on the face of it, early versions did not have LEDs. the LED lights can be used to help trouble shoot faults (inputs & outputs) if it has lights on it. u will need (ignition in) , (hyd charge in), (seat/belt in) before the (fuel hold solenoid out) light will come on. Again majority of the time if those loaders shutoff after returning from start position,
it comes down to fuses or corroded wiring connections, as ward said it could be fuel solenoid but not likely, unplug the harness that plugs into fuel solenoid, check connections. the control module could swapped from 2070 just to rule it out

Hi I'm new to this conversation but have the same problem. I checked the voltage coming to mine and it is way below 12 volts .
