i'm currently planning to buy a 843 and found 2 ones near were i live. One is an 843 from 1988 where the seller wrote it has an ISUZU engine, i thought 843 was equipped with a perkins engine. I would not like to buy a one with a perkins engine since it may hard to get parts for. Here a picture from the engine http://ardiehl.de/Bobcat/843_enine2.jpg The other one is a 853, here the engine: http://ardiehl.de/Bobcat/853_engine1.jpg Both have already about 5000 hours. Can someone tell me 1) what engines are there on the pics (both are diesel engines) 2) are there 843's that are equipped with another engine than the perkins one 3) is there a belt between the pump and the engine (than it should not be to hard to install some other engine, just in case) I have found shop manuals for 7x but not a one for the 843/853 to have a look at the specs, therefore sorry for the stupid questions. Thx Armin

I believe they came with both engines, depending on the year. Both were strong and dependable.
Those are high hours, the engines generally do about 6,000 hours before needing attention.
The 853 is newer, what is the price defference between the 843s and 853?

Thanks for the reply, price is the same and hours are also the same. I will try to visit the seller on saturday to have a look at both ones. In the meantime i found the sm for 843, and it is an ISUZU engine as the seller stated. I know the engines may be near to life end but it should be possible to replace the engine by some other one. As far as i know, the ISUZU engine was also used in some Opel and Isuzu cars.

Personally i'd lean more towards the 853, its newer and the east/west motor/pump configuration.
With the engines, go have a look, start them up, make sure they are stone cold, put your hand on them to confirm. See how easily they start and how long it takes for the smoke to clear. Even at 5,000 hours the engines may have a lot of life left. I had a 743 with 6,500 hours. It was a pain to start when cold, but when warm it was fine. It would run all day.

I just had a look at the 843, the engine started promptly with very little smoke and only during start (after entering the code), engine was cold (but it was not really cold, about 10 degree celsius here). The engine runs fine without any unexpected noise. Engine oil looked ok, cooling water did not seem to have oil in. Hydraulics seems to be ok, no noise, no oil under the machine. Cylinders do not have any leaks. Drive motors are not moisy and runs same speed on left and right. May be the engine is not the first one, dont know. Except the rear tires and one pedal that needs a little bit more foot preasure, i really do not have anything to criticize. The 853 will be more expensive than announced because the dealer wants to add VAT even if it was not announced, that will be to expensive for me. I will think about the 843 over the weekend but i think i will buy it.

If I had a pick between a 43 series or a 53 series I would go with the 53 without a doubt , the 43 series was a good machine , the 53 series was much better -------- don't buy the first thing you come across , keep looking

The perkins engines were used in 843s up to the mid 80s. Parts for the perkins engine are getting harder to get and a rebuilt engine will probably be more than the machine costs. The 853 is definitely an upgrade. I think your decision depends on condition of the machine and what you plan to do with it.

ok, thanks for the hints. Today i made a trip to the netherlands to have a look at another 853 with 2300 hours. Everything seems to work ok. This one was also equipped with a isuzu engine but a different one than in the 843. Due to the fact that this one was sold for the same price than the 843, i bought this one. It will be delivered next week. Btw, does somone have a service manual, the one that i found only lists serial 508418001 and above, i have 508415086 ?

The 843 came with 3 engines, the 843b was the one with the Isuzi engine. The other two are just plain 843 models. I have an 843b and it runs strong and have not needed to get any engine parts.
