recently bought a bobcat 742 late 80's /thought the seller was being honest but turned out he lied all the way/now i have over $ 6200 into this machine /engine has a severe blowbye problem oil leaks out of breather & they estimate another $ 2500+ to fix /i cant do this/i am willing to take a loss/does anyone have any good ideas/upstate ny 315-527-0981/thank you

What are they going to fix for $2500? Around Albany NY, the Want Ad Digest is a decent place to sell something. Also Craigs List. Good luck. I just bought an 80s 843 and so far so good.

742 Has a petrol engine if I remember, a set of piston rings and a headgasket wont cost very much. That should get it running better. Check around for prices on the parts and think about doing it yourself.

Waggles is correct. I believe your machine has a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder Ford Kent engine. Part are available through the automotive sector for this engine. Are you comfortable doing any of the work yourself? This can save you a bundle. Even just pulling and reinstalling the motor yourself will be a huge savings. Most automotive machine shops offer a flat rate overhaul service for automotive engines. Since your principle symptom is blow-by, I think that you will be looking at a re-bore, pstons and rings. I would also have the shop service the head while you have it off. So long as the oil pressure is solid, the bottom end should be in good shape. Get on the internet and do some research before giving up on this machine, especially if the rest of the machine is in good shape. Pulling the plug on the 642 and moving on to a different machine may only be putting you into position where you are dealing with somebody else's problems. Good Luck!!

Here is a kit that may work for you: http://www.rpmmachine.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=50 I would call to make sure, but it looks like the correct one. Cheers!

These engines seemed to develop piston failure that caused severe blow-by. New pistons are needed in addition to piston rings. You should check the bore for wear before ordering your pistons. A re-bore was not needed on mine. The passenger car pistons are quite durable. You should check the oil pump end clearance and if necessary sand the case and plate on a sheet of sand-paper placed on a piece of glass. New pumps are NLA.
