Ok, I have a few questions. I looked at Bobcat that a friend of a friend has. It is a 742B with serial #509418927. It has the Ford gas engine with a rod sticking out the side of a block. Overall it is in good looking shape and it has new tires. The story goes, he bought it two years ago for $8000 and put about 50 hrs on it. It now has 50?? hrs. He loaned it to a brother in law in which the engine threw the rod, (sounds like my luck). He said everything worked great until then and it has been sitting since then (2 yrs). Here are a few questions that I have. First, is there anything in the hydraulics that would lock up and cause the motor to grenade? Can you tell me what year this thing is off of the serial #? He said that a mid - late 70s ford engine out of a Mustang or Pinto would bolt right in. Is this true? If not. what would be an affordable alternative? I,m thinking I could find a good engine, through it in, replace some filters, seat cover, etc. and sell it for a pretty good profit. Thanks for any info.

The engine wouldn't throw a rod if the pump locked up, it would just stall.
Generally throwing a rod is caused by water getting into the combustion chamber and hydraulicing causing the rod to bend and break.
If you get another engine, you will need to mount a govonor to it, the engine you have in it now are in escorts i think, so getting a cheap runner should be easy'ish and mount the govenor to the 'new' engine.

a 742b should have come with a mitsubishi engine.

How do I tell what year this is? If it is Ford or Mitsubishi, what years of engines will interchange with it. I also forgot to ask what this would be worth running and cleaned up? Thanks

I forgot, the ford motor is a kent and was used in early pinto 1600 cc the smallest that was used.If it is a ford then all you should need is a short block as your gov,and manifolds should be on the bad motor. The Mitsu. was used in little dodge pickups and mini vans and other apps.

If you find a good place to get a kent shortblock please post it. I have been searching extensively and there are very hard to come by because the spec racers love that block. I have found quite of few reman. long blocks but $2800 and up. Any ford 1.6L wont necessarily fit. The motor is also know as the Ford FL98 industrial engine.

Howdy, Bought my 742B three years ago for $7,000. It had 1850 hours on it and it came with a bucket, fork lift, grapple arm, and a home-made snow plow blade. Based on the area market at the time I felt like I made a good deal. Used skid-steers did not stay on the market very long it seems. So far it has given me very little trouble. For home-owner use, the dealer told me it should last forever. That's a long time but check the boards in a few more years and I will provide an update :-) John

I don't have the extra cash yet, so I haven't purchased it just yet. I don't think it will be going anywhere any time soon. I am sure I will have plenty of questions when I get it home and start tearing into it.
