Brand new to this forum. I just bought a Bobcat 310 skid loader to mess around my house with. It needed a head gasket which I replaced and the engine now runs good. However, I am having problems with its moving and turning. I noticed that when running, none of the pump pulleys are rotating... however they are engaged off the pulleys on the engine crankshaft must not be working. I see an electric clutch on the very end of the engine crankshaft which I thought was for low gear engagement Should the pump pulleys be turning when the motor is running, both at idle and operating speed? What causes the pulleys on the motor shaft to engage and turn... centrifugal force clutch? Can someone explain what the electric clutch does (actuated by button on left lever) and how it works? Thanks from a Newbie.
 
The clutch on the end of the engine is for two-speed. It should default to low-range. It is an electromagnetic clutch that shifts drive between two pulleys.
The clutch is fixed to the shaft with a key, so the key could be sheared, or the clutch itself could be busted letting it freewheel. It is in low-range all the time until you hit the button, then it drives the larger pulley, when it works right.
Something should be moving when the engine is turning.
Incidentally, your drive is mechaincal with clutches in the side chaincases, and you have no drive pumps.

I've never worked on one, sorry, so I don't know who hard it is to do. I had to consult a manual to answer your question.
Looks to me like the clutch slides onto a keyed shaft, but there is a special installer the manual calls for.
I'll bet it's not hard to figure out if you've got the machine right there.

Looks to me like the clutch slides onto a keyed shaft, but there is a special installer the manual calls for.
I'll bet it's not hard to figure out if you've got the machine right there.

That could be tough to find used, maybe even hard-to-find new. I dunno. I'll look around here after folks come back to work.....=).

Hi when you turn the ignition onto acc but dont start the BC do you here a clunk come from the two speed clutch.

I took the v-belt drive system apart yesterday. There are 2 pulleys mounted on the engine shaft both of which are actuated by integral electric clutches. The outer clutch/pulley is the low speed driver and the inner clutch/pulley is the high speed driver. Both of my clutches are "bad". The inner low speed clutch is mechanically broken and the outer one has a bad bearing and also must not have been engaging since neither pulley was turning when the engine was running. The motor shaft and keyway are fine and I didn't find a sheared key. Called the local Bobcat dealer and they want $635 for the outer low speed clutch/pulley (PN 6558185) and $589 for the inner high speed clutch/pulley (PN 6555493). Ouch! Anybody know where I night find used parts? I might also just go back with a single low speed pulley that directly mounts to the shaft (with no clutch). I will lose high speed capability but it sure will be cheaper. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!

That's expensive.......I was gonna say go with one fixed pulley and forget the clutches.....and you already got it figgered out.
BTW, it appears you are now the resident 310 expert.......=).

I have had a 310 now for 20 years. I have replaced the bearings in the clutches but have not replaced a clutch assy. YET. The high speed quit the day before yesterday cleaning snow. Have not had the chance to check it out. There is a Wheelhorse clutch for sale on e-bay that looks like the low speed outer clutch. It is 1 1/8" shaft size. e-bay number 140297728058 . I saw where you had replaced the head gasket. That Kohler K 341 is expensive to overhaul. I had engine trouble several years ago and replaced the engine with a two cylinder Kohler Command 20hp. It now has the power to take advantage of the high speed.

Just a thought, but a variable speed belt drive or snowmobile clutch would be a good choice for the 310 and cost less then the bobcat setup. You would automatically get your high and low range. When the engine rpm is low the clutch has about a 3.5 to 1 under drive and at high rpm it offers some overdrive, (@ .80 in to 1 out)
Also they automatically back shift to a lower ratio when the load is increased or the rpm drops (engine is over loaded) They offer a wide range of springs and weights to tune it to meet your needs.

I can't see why that would not be a good choice for this loaders. The driven clutches for the 94 series where used on JD snowmobiles and could likely be found at sled wreckers at a reasonable price. The drive clutch would likely have to be purchased new as it must be designed to fit the 4 stroke crank and tuned for the much lower rpm of a 4 stroke.

Sorry I had not checked the forum. I installed a Kohler Model CH20S it has a 1" shaft so it requires a 1" to 1 1/8" sleeve. I also installed a 60amp GM alternator and fans to pull the hot air out of the engine compartment. If you will send me you e-mail address I will send you some photos.
