Help w/Owatonna Mustang 1200

Hi, does anyone out there know anything about this machine, I bought a used one a few months ago and am trying to find out where to get parts for it??? Also, when I'm using it hard it really groans and the wheels will stop turning until I let up, is this a problem with the hydraulic system or clutch?????????? Also, can anyone lead me to a good description about the hydraulic system and how it work, this is my first rig with hydraulics...... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much Dave

I doubt there is a clutch in this machine, i think it is hydrostatic drive like most skid steers.

Unfortunately, most of us in here only have bobcat machines.

It is normal for them to groan when under load, i would replace your filters to start off with, these can cause the hydrostatic pump to starve of oil causing it to groan and cavetate causing LOTS of heat. There will be your normal ones that are easily replaced but there also may be 1 or 2 bronze filters that are hidden. You may need to call the local mustang service agent and speak to their service department and see if they will tell you (some companies will not give out any information).

Hopefully there are other people on the forum that know more than i do about these machines.

Ooh, you are running the machine at full or near full throttle rite? you really need to have the revs up when the machine is operating or it will really groan and stall.

When the lever is advanced the pully tightens allowing the belt to turn faster therefore giving the machine faster hydraulics and more responsive controls. If anyone has a website that has parts for this machine or knows where i can get them i would appreciate it. Thanks.

Try Golden Eagle Equipment. You can order parts for Mustang on their website. Excellent customer service. It helps if you have a parts manual to get numbers. Try ssbtractor.com. They have quite a few used manuals for older equipment.

Gehl still has parts for just about every Mustang made, including the Owatonna manufactured one. I have a Mustang 310 and have gotten several parts from Gehl.

I have owned a 1200 for 15 years and have much experience with the 1200. As someone said earlier this machine has a variable sheave and belt instead of a hyrdraulic or gear transmission. In my experience when they groan and stop moving it's because the belt is slipping. You either need a new belt or the sheave and belt have gotten oil soaked and thus it slips. If you need a new belt you can get one from a Mustang dealer or buy an off the shelf inductrial belt that will replace the OEM belt. The one I use is a Dayco part number 513-226-7000 which is half the price of an OEM belt. If the belt is slipping because it has oil on it you will want to clean the belt and sheave and then check for the source of oil. I just use engine scour type cleaner to soak the belt and sheave and rinse with water. Try this first before replacing the belt unless the belt is obviously shot. The source of oil could be an engine leak such as the output shaft seal or more likely the rotary union that connects the speed control hydraulics to the variable sheave. If this needs replacing you can again go to the dealer or for less money just go buy the part at an industrial supply house. The union is made by Deublin, part number 1005-057-019. You can also try rebuiling the rotary union by taking it apart and replacing all the orings. Hope this helps.

I have had some luck on ebay from time to time. Also, if you can't get the belt to release completely from the shaft with the clutch sheave, you don't have breaks with this machine and you can't build up a hill and grade it. Using the levers only gives reverse and forward. If the belt is released, then the levers become breaks.
