I recently purchased what I believed to be a 743B but I am beginning to wonder. The serial number says it was built in May 1991 but the unit has the old style one piece axle and manual fuel shut off. Did the early production 743B's still have this configuration? From what I've read, the 743B's were built between 1991 - 1993. I also thought they changed from a vane pump to a gear pump in the B's. Anyone got some insight on this issue..

One other thing to look at is the chain case, do the drive motors mount to a block that is about the same size as the drive motor? this is the drive motor carrier.
The 743 had a reduction box, the 743B i believe were all essentially direct drive through the drive motor carrier.

Tazza, I'm a little confused by your answer. Do you want me to look at where the Hydrostatic Motors attach behind the inspection plate? I notice on the rear wheels is what appears to be a reduction gear case! I was pressure washing the machine and noticed an 1/8" hole on the left side. Is this a vent for the gear case and if so, shouldn't have a venting cap to keep water from getting into the case?

as to determining ( could be wrong? maybe a s,n break. but the upgrade on the b = pop off axle hub.(thereby allowing axle seal replacement without removining sprockets. another upgrade was the removal of the stop cable. goining to a fuel shutoff solenoid. keep in mind replacing ax seals on old ax was a bear. (indication of pop off hub is big ass bolt in center of hub,( between lugstuds)

thath would confirm 743. whats the issue dude ?
From the picture it is clear I have a 743 and not a 743 B which is the decal set on the machine. I guess this is another example of buyer beware. I purchased the unit from a neighbor who owned the unit since 2001 and is a mechanic who owns his own shop. I wanted the 743B because a friend has attachments I could borrow but I am assuming they will work still on the standard 743B. The fact that the unit was built in May of 1991 lead me to believe it was a 743B. Did they make 743 and 743B concurrently? It looks like one axle seal is leaking a little but it is going to have to get much worse before I replace the seal.

The 743 will use the same attachments seals are much harder I just did mine pick it up and see if there is any play in the axle if so do the bearings to 50 bucks per axle

Thanks for the input. Did you have to use any special tools to install the bearing race. The manual shows a couple of specialty tools. I figure the bearing removal could be done in my press much like some old car axles. They show an install tool for pushing the seal into the housing straight, not sure if you really need that one if you took your time pushing the seal into the housing.

The outside is easy the inside is a pita I tryed many ways but ended up useing a ten ton porta power with a tiny ram I took the whole chaine case off to do it to put the seals in I used tazza's trick and cut two old races in half and a hose clamp to hold them worked great

The first 743B had the decal horizontal, small, and still had the one piece axle. The newer 743B had the decal vertical and very large and has the 2 piece axle. This is the same for the 742B.
