It is a one way clutch so when the diesel motor starts the electric starter motor does not spin to extreem speeds until you let go of the key. Another possibility is that the cranking signal between the key and starter is eratic and what you are hearing is the starter chattering. ____________________________________ The bell housing on this machine is wet, be sure to refill with lube and check on the stick between the pumps. Otherwise the pump drive gears will wear. My machine came to me apart and I don't know what type of lube to use so you will have to look in a manual.</p></blockquote><p></p>
