as best as I know it can only be a ruptured diaphragm which need to be fixed now as gas can also get in your oil and thin it and maybe lock up engine. I use a low pressure (2.5-4 psi) electric pump(no oil, gas mixing). but a stock pump should last for years if you can get fresh gaskets and diaphragm.

I have put a new mechinacal pump on. Could it be a buildup of pressure in the crankcase?

I would not think so these are low oil pressure machines , if it does not leak oil call it good and smell your oil and make sure it does not smell of gas.
