Thanks for that help guys from my last post. My new M-600 problem is, I was working it earlier last week and it just died on me with a small scoop of manure. The battery was weak so I charged it. Still wouldn't start. I decided to do a tune up, all new ignition parts nothing. I then noticed the rotor was not turning when cranking. Pulled it out, the bolt holding it was loose. I could turn the dist by hand before I did anything. It appears to be fine, however there was metal shavings in where it meshes with the other gear. The previous owner said something about the gov. needing rebuilt sometime soon. I wasn't sure what it did exactly so I took it off. It was in several pieces, the gear was missing about one third of the teeth. So the Service Manual I have for it is useless. I basically says remove "part" clean/replace then reinstall "part" on just about everything. The exploded view shows some parts that did not come off with it.... so would those missing pieces be in the oil pan? Or the bottom of the crank case cover? If they are in the crank case cover can you remove it without pulling the engine completely? I am assuming the shavings in the dist housing was from gov. IF I can't get to the small broken pieces without pulling the engine would it hurt anything to leave them wherever they are?? My main ? is there is no part number stamped on the gov. should I go with these numbers I found online in Wisconsin Manual? REF. NO. 258 PART NO. T-89-2-S1 Their exploded view looks identical to what I took apart, well what is left of it. Another thing is how do you break up a conversation so its not a huge paragraph like this. I tried hitting enter several times, and putting in a lot of spaces but when I look at the preview its just a huge paragraph. Thanks again.

If you don't pull the pan off, i'd at least install a magnetic sump plug. Any metal particles floating around stand a better chance of being caught this way. You remove the pulg at servicing time and they should come too.

Years ago I had a governor blow up on a brand new engine....chunks rode around in the thing for several years and never caused a problem. The big pieces will be caught in the gear cover and the small stuff will find it's way into the pan......you can't get to either without pulling the engine. Oil changes and a small magnet through the drain plug (and into the distributor opening) as well as the magnetic plug like Tazza suggested are about all you can do without major work. The VF4D, VH4D and probably others use the same governor.....I see them for sale all the time on e-bay at reasonable prices. Good luck!

Okay. Well that stinks that I can't pull the pan without pulling the whole engine. I'll have to buy a magnetic plug then. I have found a few online, they start at $383 and go up to $715.... There is one on ebay for a VF4 engine, from what I have read the only difference between the VF4d and the VF4 is the exhaust valves. So for $20 on ebay I think I'm going to go for it. NAPA nor O'Reilly's have or can get it. I have not been to Bobcat of St. Louis yet, but figure they would be up in the $xxx range. Glad to know someone that had one blow up and didn't clean it out, puts me at ease a bit. I figure the reason for it the break was that the rod was not in the #10 hole like it was suppose to be it was in the very top above the #12 hole, so I suppose it was over stressed.

Wow....$715??????? Think I'd be tempted to epoxy one of those 'superduty button' magnets to the end of the plug for that price. (Not recommending that by the way) :-)
