Has anyone made their own thumb for the backhoe? Any pictures of it? I see you can buy a mechanical one for about $200 for a small machine, I am thinking of getting things together and making one.

It's on my to do list as well. I see the factory ones use the same pin the bucket rotates on (must be a longer pin?) But I have not looked into it further. See some ad on thumbs on Ebay.
I have a job setting rocks this summer to terrace a hill side.
Lets us know what you do.

e-bay is where I saw the small mechanical ones which would be better than nothing but if it got used very much at all I think hydraulic would be worth it. I looked at a cat excavator with one and they did make a new pin and mounted it on the bucket. Just for parts and cylinder I think he said he paid 1600 but that is a big machine also. this idea needs more research but just digging out stumps and such it would be handy.

For the thumb cylinder, I though a electric over hyd valve could be added to one of the hoe circuits to split the flow of that circuit between an existing cylinder and the thumb cylinder.
Would require wiring power to the hoe but would simplify plumbing greatly.

i know this thread is old and im a newb here, but was lurking this thread, most bobcat excavators and major ones will sell you a longer pin , i had a 331 and there was 2 pin lengths, on my current machine tb135 i just re-betterbuilt a TAG thumb, i rebuilt mine using factory bushings , i replaced my wrist pin, ordered 3 extra bushings and found a piece of 4 1/2" pipe and milled it out to bushing tolerence, then welded in and cut off excess bushings, this way i could get better wear and added 2 more grease fittings, havnt had a problem since
