starter spins but does'nt engage sometimes

Generally this is the starter drive gear or “bendix”

Take it out, remove the solenoid and give the bendix gears a good clean. Stay away from grease on the gear(s) use silicone or something that won't attract grease. Ensure the plunger moves in and out smoothly and its all clean. The arm that attaches to the solenoid should be free to move too.
