I'd start by checking the diode that runs from the switch to the exciting wire on the alternator.I'd try checking it by hoolking up the B+ connector from the alt to the batttery, check the voltage at the battery with the machine running, then use a jumper wire from the exciting  terminal on the back, touch it to +ve, check the voltage at the battery again. You shoudl only need to touch it to get it to start charging, it shouldn'r be needed to stay connected to keep charging (i don't believe so at least).
