I've got a 773G with a V2003 turbo engine. The turbo, and the injectors were changed when I got it Checked the compression, all the cyls are around 470- 490. Intake is clear. The smoke looks grey/black, not smelling of burnt oil. PCV is open. I checked the injectors, The're cracking at 2000/2100, good pattern. Not sure where to look now.

I think I would look to the turbo first , just cause it was just changed don't mean nothing , in fact it would make me look more towards the turbo , when it originally fail it may have sent fragments thru the engine and who ever replaced it may have not did a good job cleaning the engine out and it got toasted again or it could have just been a bad rebuild of the turbo , take off the hose from the turbo going into the engine and you can stick your finger in there as see if you get any oil out --------------another thing could be valve guide seals ----------

I pulled the turbo. There was oil in the comp end. Alot of carbon build up on the drive side. Cleaned it up. Gave it the wiggle test. Up and down, in and out. all looked good. reinstalled it. Ran the machine, Still smoking. No oil from the turbo comp side. Also cleaned up the intake mannifold. Was thinking about what U said about valve seals. Yanked the head, found cracks between the precombustion, and the exaust valves on #2,and 3. My question is.Why gray/black smoke. Not white, why the carbon build up. And why no coolant in the cyls. The pistons and cyls all look good, not alot of build up for 4500hrs. Also noticed a reddish material around a couple of precombustion ports.

I don't know , sometimes everything seems to be ok but you know something is wrong ----------------what about them cracks are they in the head , do you think it is just casting marks or do you think it goes deeper , if it concerns you then bring the head to a engine rebuilder or a machine shop that could magnaflux it and have it checked out , you could buy the three cans of magnaflux and do it yourself , but the stuff ain't cheap and if you were only going to use it once it probally would be better to have someone familiar with magnafluxing it to check it ------------ does the engine have to be periodically topped off with water or oil , has it ran hot recently -------- if it is losing coolant and there is a crack then maybe it could be steam you are seeing in the exhaust ---------- you confusing me with “ there was oil on the comp end and not on the turbo comp side “ you should not be seeing any oil , the wiggle test will give you some indication of how the bearing are on the turbo shaft but doesn't really indicate condition of seals , if you are seeing oil on one side the turbo if could not be from the turbo but instead becoming from the engine into the turbo ------------something I just thought about is the gate in the turbo which is hooked by linkage to the diapham , I have seen that gate get stuck with carbon build up and the motor smoke but it also made it run bad -------you said the turbo was changed recently , why was it changed and how long ago , I say this because I have seen where after a turbo failure it took quite a few hours to burn off all the oil that had accumulated in the muffler

Thanks 4 the input guys. Fish. What I meant was there was oil in the compresser end of the turbo, but after cleaning the turbo up,.There was no more oil coming from the turbo. It was change by the previous owner. Which got me thinking, I'm playing" Wag the dog". This could be injection pump issues. Which it does have. Doesn't shut down smoothly, seem to drag on, throttle lever leaks oil. Also. "mic'd the cyls, It could use a rebore. Too many questions. Checked out the price of a new engine. Not bad considering, I need this machine to run when I need it. Took me 4 Hrs to pull the engine/Hydro package. Feeling alot better. Ive got Some spare parts. Thanks again.
