So my 743 would only click when the key was turned so I had the starter rebuilt. I just reinstalled the rebuilt starter, hooked up the same battery and turned the key. The engine bgan to turn slowly and then smoke started to come out of the negative battery terminal. I quickly shut everything off and disconnected the battery. The negative side cable was extremely hot. Any ideas? The battery is only 4 months old and used to start it prior to the starter going out.

it could be as simple as a loose or dirty terminal on the battery cable , I would also check the ground cable connection on the block , also check the surface metal where the starter comes in contact with metal , clean it will some heavy sand or emery paper so the starter nose gets grounded -----------also look to see if the post going into the battery has broke it seal around the battery casing from turning on it too hard and acid is leaking up and into the terminal connection

And if its a bad battery, now is the time to have it replaced under warranty.
