Looking at buying a used 743 and can't find the VIN plate. Pump howls loudly and stops moving after 4 minutes. Assume that it needs a pump and is priced accordingly. Machine is in good condition, lots of new parts, find it hard to believe that it may be stolen... want to find all possible VIN locations to check for any ID that may have been missed.

Its on the back of the chassis on the left above the radiator. They do get removed for reasons i don't know, i have bought 1 or 2 without plates before, some with impact marks on it too so you can't read the number.
Now as for the howling and drive problem that sounds VERY common. Lift the cab and look at the pump, if it has a square block on the pump its a common fault when the filter gets plugged. Its behind the fitting on the left, middle hose (3 hoses in a row here). Replace the filter or clean it and you should be good to go! You may have a bargain on your hands if its the same style machine as i believe it may be.

Thanks for the info. Not so worried about the pump (I'm a mechanic) am worried about getting stuck with a hot machine and a visit by the police. That tag is gone. There must be other numbers elsewhere just don't know where. How can I order parts without a VIN? How long did they make this machine? Thanks, again!

It was built for 10 years.
The newer machines have a second serial number on the chaincase just above where the arms rest above the chain case oil level point. Yours *may* have it there, or it could have been rubbed off too.
