I need to go though the bearings, chain, sprockets and gear reductions on a 743b. I have heard the the best way is to separate the chaincase from the machine. Is this the best way and if so how difficult is it.

I believe it is the easiest way. Two members in here have done it this way with great success. The main mounting bolts, two for the pump, one for the arm that runs across the chain case to the lift spool. thats about it! can't get easier than that. Oh, the hydro lines to the motors.
