kscales and others who have bought a used machine recently. Even if the seat is in decent shape, I would remove it, clean under it, maybe paint and or deal with any rust. You tend to get wet dirt or sawdust under and around the seat that you really do not see. It will end rusting that area. If the seat is beat, they sell decent aftermarket ones on EBAY that for me were an exact fit.
 
I recently bought a 743 and pulled the seat. It had mud, rocks, a screwdriver and a live .22 round under the seat. Yes, thats correct, a live .22 caliber round was under the seat.

You never know when you might need an old .22 bullet :)
I too have found all sorts under and behind seats, can of engine start (bad sign i know) screw drivers, shifting spanner. Even found a quick coupler in the goo under the cab of a machine i bought....
