Hi all, I have an S250 which makes a grumbling noise from the fan when I first start it. Per the owner manual, and after raising the cab it suggests topping up the fan gearbox however I can't find the unit pictured. Any thoughts or suggestions.???? thanks

There will be a fan belt going from the engine crankshaft up to the gearbox, unless it is a newer (2006?) model then it will have a hydraulic driven variable speed fan, no gearbox is used on those machines andit will have a spin on hydraulic filter below the fan.

Hi Ken, Thanks for the response. definitely no belt. I'm wondering if the fan unit has a 1 way check valve, could the oil be draining back out of the unit?

I kinda doubt it, the hydraulic pump would fill it up instantly anyway. Does the bearing seem tight on the fan motor shaft? There is no debris caught in the fan? Not sure what else to suggest.

you say no belt , so you have the hydraulic motor style fan , it should not even come on when you start up , there is a switch that activates it when the temperature gets up and it will go off and on while running , maybe thats what you are hearing , it is load when it kicks in and sounds like a supercharger --------there is a filter right next to it that is dedicated to just the fan motor , I think I would change it and drain the old one into a clean container and look for particles , also maybe cut the filter open and check the media for pieces of the motor coming apart , there was a problem with early models fan motor and another motor came out that replaced it

When ever the engine is running the fan is going to be turning.
