I'm pretty sure that if you have bad seals it would possibly leak externally. I also think that there are internal seals where if they are bad the cylinder will "leak down"????

Internal piston seal leak, the ram will slowly drop. Pressure seal on the rod failure, you will get oil leaking out of the ram, you'll see that one.
Just do note that a few inches per hour fall is acceptable without a bucket on the machine.
