I have a 2002 RC-50 that will not start, when cranking over it is puffing black smoke out the muffler and if the oil cap is off getting stuff out that cap hole.

the motor is a 3024c perkins/cat
I am suspecting it could be rings, i will check this week for compression.
if I do need to get into the rings can this be repaired with the motor in the machine, or would it require pulling the motor?
also, I went through all of the fuel up to the injectors and that seams fine, if I crack open the lines to the ejectors it does have fuel there.
I am not a mechanic so any advice or suggestion would be appreciated.
