In reassembling my 853, I ordered this replacement part labeled "flexible spacer". By the way the old one was worn, I thought it was a step into the cab, but the name of the part threw me.
What is it for?

Good question.

Maybe just a safety to keep your foot from slipping through? I was going to guess a soft stop when the arms drop, but I do not think the arms reach them.

Hope someone knows what they are actually for.

Looking at my 853, it must be something to step on getting into the cab when the lift arms are up. Wouldn't do anything when they are down as the front section doesn't come close enough to warrant a soft stop at all. I might pick up a set, or make my own, as the notch at the bottom for the tilt cylinder only allows the toe of your shoe.....and I have slipped on it several times....having the extra piece would help for sure.
