proper way to measure a bucket

what is technically the width of a bucket, the cutting edge length or the bucket sides?

I do not believe that there is a "proper" way to measure a bucket. Most good manufacturers will give all dimensions. In most cases the widest part of the bucket is what you want to know as this will be the width of the hole it makes.
