i have a 1984 843 with a perkins diesel just changed the oil and filter converted old fuel filter to new spin on style repaired broken exhaust and replaced air filter. Ran machine hard for eight hours excavating dirt and then parked it.started it the next night ran it an easier pace and still no problems. the next night warmed it up for fifteen minutes as usualstarted pushig a bucket of dirt and it died out restarted ran for awhile at half idle sitting still then coughs stutters and dies i just replaced all the filters ,fluids full and now wont stay running days after service i dont get it

Try adding a couple of gals. of fuel to the tank and see if it stays running. If that fixes it then the fuel pick up line in the tank is broke off.

thank you for the advice old machinist i actually tried that before i posted this question and it didnt change the situation. im confused because nothing seems out of the ordinary all hoses and lines are connected air filter was just replaced so it should have air flow guess iwill have to pull off air cleaner and fuel lines and filter to check for obstructions ? i dont know im not much of a mechanic

the perkins can a bear to bleed start at pump go to inj if you just modfied the fuel sys i would supect she is sucking air inspect lines and fittings also get it running and have someone pump the sqeezy ball does it come back up. might be the lift pump.

after pulling off air filter inner and outer and air hose and finding no obstructions i cracked all the injectors and got fuel from all of them. Pulled off fuel lines and blew them out with air compressor nothing in them either.Decided to take off fuel filter and dump it out. Filled it with fresh fuel and it ran well for ten minutes then same thing again.Bought new fuel filter running strong again must have sucked something off the tank i guess unless it acts up again. I think i will remove the tank next weekend and clean it out.

I have two 843s with the same engine. It really does sound like you have a fuel blockage issue. I have used a coathanger and carefully pulled the fuel pickup line end out of the tank and found the screen to be clogged. Also the fuel line itself gets old and soft and collapses when the engine is pulling fuel. Does your machine still have the pump ball? I would take the line off at the inj pump and pump the ball to be sure you are getting plenty of fuel. Any bad connection in the fuel line from tank to pump could be sucking air.

Removed fuel tank emptied fuel into can through two screens dumped out three 3/4" stone, broken float for fuel gauge and broken off screen from fuel pick up line beat sides of tank with hammer to free any debris rinsed it several more times with clean fuel that i disposed of and put it all back together after empting fuel filter.Ran for past week and have not had a single problem. Thanks for all the advice.

Yikes, that's a lot of crud. I had to use de-greaser and a pressure washer in mine. Took a while, but got it all out. I just left it a few days in the sun to make sure it was nice and dry.
