Old Mustang 1200 drive issues

Mine has an 11/16 nut on the rotor union. Others I have are 5/8. The end of the variable pulley has 3/4” flats for a wrench. Put a wrench on each one and remove the rotor union (right hand threads). Be sure not to loose the sealing washer.

You may need to adjust the 1 7/16 nut on the variable to keep the new belt flush with the edges of the pulley at full speed. You may need to make a special wrench like the one in the picture and use it with the 3/4” wrench to turn the large locking nut. It has a 15 degree angle bend.

It should just screw out from the side of the rotary union. 1/8" pipe fitting thread I think. Might be 1/4" . Yes, they do look fragile and if the sheave isn't straight they wobble like crazy scary.

Thanks!! Just like you said, 3/4" flats, and a 5/8". Came off easily. I put a tent over the machine so a lot better for for working out there. Now I just need to put the new belt on. Not a good time to do it when it's cold. The new belt is very tight.

I finally managed to get the belt on. I purchased the new belt from VBelt Guys. The way I got it on was to first put it on the primary sheaves. These were already in the open. Then I used a pry bar to open up the secondary sheaves and propped them open with a block of wood. Then I put the belt on the secondary sheaves as much as I could, then I turned the secondary with one hand and the other hand keeping the belt in the sheaves. Next up is tightening the springs.

Looks so familiar. I’ve had the same setup for most of my winter repairs… nothing like bustin knuckles in sandy grease below freezing. At least it’s not raining sleet on you too. I keep my spring on the secondary as loose as possible. I figure it keeps the belt from wearing out as fast. So far it hasn’t had a problem with belt slip under load. Thanks for the updates!

Finally got the old girl going. It had not run since mid september but started up right away. The belt was not slipping so I backed off the the spring as much as I could. I put back the seat and cage and the maching is back and running. Before it broke, the maching would surge or bounce a lot so I think that was either the belt slipping or maybe the shaft slipping. In any case, glad it's working. Thanks to all for the helpful comments on this. I could not have done this on my own.

Yes, Mustang is up and running, hopefully stays that way for a while. I have even used it to clear the snow. We've had the Arctic Blast for the past month in Ontario!
