No idea how old this thing is, but it's been fairly reliable. (SN 40XX) My problem is the starter went out and I don't see anyway to get at it. (Kohler 2 cyl). The 1 post I did run across said that the engine needs to be removed to access the starter. Tell me it aint so!. Anybody have any experience with a Kolher engine starter? Thx

Chances are, it does have to come out. Sometimes to get the shaft oriented correctly they have to mount the engine so the starter is inaccessible.
You might check the facebook group Melroe Bobcat Owners of America , they deal extensively with the clutch machines and if anyone has found a workaround it'll be posted there.

I just posted a complete Kohler engine for sale in the classifieds (including starter) if you can use any of it?
