Hello everybody. I recently purchased and old 371 and it’s not recharging the battery or making spark. I borrowed my pick up battery and ratchet strapped it to the roof and used some jumper cables and it ran good until the battery died. The reason I don’t believe it’s making spark is once the cables are removed within 3-5 seconds it stalls out. With the cables it stays running. I’ve looked all over it and I cannot find a serial number or the engine model number. I know it’s a 371 and it has a Kholer 14HP engine. The dude I bought it off of said he thinks it’s from 1982 but he’s not positive. I think it has a dynamo instead of an alternator and I’ve found several on eBay that might fit but without better info I’m reluctant to pull the trigger. I really need to get this thing running so any input would be a huge help. Thanks for reading !

The magneto / generator is located behind the flywheel. You will need to remove the engine shroud and remove the flywheel to get access to it.
It sounds like that is where your issue is. The wiring on 371 is pretty rudimentary, and if it will run by powering is with a battery, then most likely the wiring is intact and the problem is with the magneto / generator.
Cheers - SR
