Hey guys, I searched the forum but cant find anything on the topic. Has anyone ever changed out a variable drive pump with non factory pumps? Im trying to find some thru drive pumps that are not 1400 a piece haha. Looking at some surplus or tractor supply stores and there are variable pumps that meet the specs of the of the pumps in the skid steers. This isnt for any particular loader. Im looking at buying a lilttle older unit as i rent one a time or two a month and figure its time to buy. But i dont wanna buy a 3-5k unit to put another 3 or 4k worth of pumps in it. Anyone have any thoughts?

Honestly, you'd be wasting your time. Just find a good running machine and go from there.
I bought a machine with the pump in pieces, a little over 1k and i had it back to new condition. That was new rotating groups, wear plates, bearings and a seal kit. As long as you can avoid the dealer, parts can generally be had at a reasonable price.
This was for a Bobcat 743 with a vickers TA1919 pump. The newer machines with a sperry sunstrand pump aren't as cheap, but still reasonable.
