New to me 873, time to address some issues..

So I bought the 873, its a 1998 "F" model, 4100 hours, runs good, needs some tlc. I thought I got a pretty good deal on it..one of those things where I stretched myself a little thin to buy it but once I drove it..Oh my god...It doesnt hop, and it even has a button to keep the bucket level while lifting! This stuff is all new to me! How does someone change the oil in this? does it matter if you get all the oil out or is it okay if some stays in the cooler? Oil doesnt look bad. This machine has Hand/foot controls, key start. My temp, fuel and volt meter dont work but the hourmeter does, anything to check? 1 or 2 wheels are oily, axle seals tough to do on these? I've never worked on one this "new" haha. A lot has changed compared to the 743. Anything else I should check? Timing belt will be done REAL soon...This deutz makes me a little nervous. As for changing the oil, warm her up and let it drain. the longer the better. I can noramlly get between 10 and 11 quarts in. I think fll system spec is 16 qt, but you will never get that out of it. As for uyour gauges, I would start with fuses. For axle seals, they are not bad to do if you know how and have the propper tools. First thing is to jack it up and see if there is axle end play. If the wheel moves in and out, the the bearings are bad that is why the seal is leaking. If no play, remove the axle nut, note locating off the key. Start axle bolt, but don't tighten. Install large puller, I use a 13 ton 3 jaw. Heat around keyway with torch. Hit with bfh until it pops. Replace seal and assemble. If yours has the the 3 retaining bolts. I use replacement bolts with spacer behind. If you dont't "contain" the hub, it will shoot 15 or so feet when it lets loose.

Wow, I didn't realize how much bigger the 873 is compared to the 743. My fuse holders were so full of corrosion in my 743 that the PO wired around them. I still have to replace them both. Be careful with the hub.

Its WIDE too. First time I ran it, it felt like a tank. The hub wont be done for awhile..I like to mentally prepare myself for the bigger jobs, so I know whats involved before it gets tied up for a few days. I put my clam bucket on it to test the auxiliary hydraulics, blew a hose lol. I have a new seat coming and have a manual in pdf format for it now too. Sadly like most skid steers, its been neglected some and it will take some work to bring it back, It really bothers me running a machine with cracks, squeeks, and rattles. It'll be up to snuff soon though.
