Hey guys just joined the forum. Last month I picked up a 1992 853G bobcat. I got it for what I think was a steal, but obviously it has some issues. Major issues: 1- doesn't run off diesel tank. Previous owner rigged up a 5 gal can and it runs fine off that 2- hydraulic leak. Still attempting to locate this. 3- glow plugs disconnected. From searching it seems the best fix for the fuel tank is to install a new pickup by removing the battery. I'm still trying to figure out the leak. Machine works fine I just have a constant drip coming from underneath. I think it may be one of the large hydraulic hoses running from the pump to the hydraulic control valve. Glow plugs- all 4 are disconnected and it looks like someone removed the relay. Also looks like one terminal for the relay was burnt. Searching said this might be a shorted glow plug. Right now I'm most concerned with the fuel tank and leak.

The fuel tank, lift the cab and reach behind the pump to the tank under the engine. There will be two lines, one us pickup, the other is the return line.
To find the leak you will need to give it a good clean then look for the leak. It's hard to find when it's covered with oil.
You may want to remove the plug to ensure they are all in good shape, hook them up to a battery and look to see if they glow right to the tip.

Worked on the fuel pickup tonight. I can reach back and get to it, but I can't get it to come out of the tank. Worked on it for like 2 hours and it won't budge. Going to try getting a new pry tool tomorrow night

I used pointy nosed pliers, always came out.
Get a new grommet to replace it with, the old ones are hard to get back in. The ones I re-used, I ground a little off it on the bench grinder and used sealant to keep it leak free.

You think they are fun getting out, putting them back in is a real hoot. I grease everything up real good. With the bushing sliding on the pick up tube, but the tube down in the tank. Then get the bushing started. Once it's in place slide the tube down until you get to the elbow and curse the elbow into the bushing.

I got the fuel tank fixed last week. Working on the hydraulic leak now. Here's what I know so far- I can see the fluid running off of the fuel tank directly under the two large hydraulic hoses that run up to the control valve. I know those hoses are high pressure so if they had a hole it would blow out but what about where they connect? Is it an o ring that might be broken?

Going to guess drive motor hoses. Do they go into the hydrostat with 45° fitting? If so I bet one of the fittings is loose. Angle fitting are subject to a torque load that can loosen them and blow the oring.

I'm not sure exactly what the fitting went into , but it was one of the two large high pressure lines that run from just above the fuel tank up to front wheel. O ring blew out. Cheap $2 fix so I'm happy! Only cost me $200 to make all the necessary repairs and change filters

ISN'T IT AMAZING HOW A FEW SMALL PROBLEMS BECOME ONE LARGER PROBLEM TO THE POINT THAT SOMEONE SELLS THE MACHINE DIRT CHEAP? I'VE WORKED ON CARS, TRUCKS & EVEN EQUIPMENT AND I'VE FOUND THIS TO BE THE CASE QUITE A FEW TIMES. IT MAKES ME WONDER IF THE SELLER WAS JUST TOO SCARED / WORRIED ABOUT BEING GOUGED AT THE DEALERSHIP TO EVEN HAVE THE ISSUES RESOLVED / DIAGNOSED. AFTER ALL, IF YOU ONLY HAD $200 IN THE REPAIR MATERAILS, THEN THE PREVIOUS OWNER COULD HAVE KEPT HIS MACHINE FOR AROUND $500 IN TOTAL REPAIRS. I SUPPOSE HE DID NOT HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY TO INVEST IN HIS MACHINE. AS A VERY FRIENDLY PIECE OF ADVICE, GREASE THAT MACHINE REALLY GOOD A FEW TIMES & REPLACE ANY GREASE FITTINGS THAT DO NOT WORK. IT HAS ALSO BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT THESE VERY GUYS WHO RELY ON THESE TYPES OF MACHINES DAY IN & DAY OUT, WILL RARELY GREASE THEM BECUASE OF THE ASSOCIATED MESSY GREASE GUN. ISN'T THAT SOMETHING?? TO ME IT IS IRONIC HOW IT ENDS UP PROVING THE OLD CLICHE "A FOOL & HIS MONEY WILL SOON PART!" GOOD JOB NONETHELESS ON THE PURCHASE & REPAIRS, THOUGH. ROCK ON!!
