My 17 year old battery barely started the engine last winter so I think it is time for replacement. Back in 2007 I had gotten a "heavy equipment" battery from Interstate that claimed to have heavier plates that wouldnt be damaged so quickly when subjected to vibration. But Interstate no longer offers such a battery.

Can anyone recommend a specific battery, size 31, that is currently available? I recognize that 17 years is unusual - I would be happy to have it last 5 years.

15 yrs is a LONG time for any battery, I have never been that lucky, not even close, so good for you

longest I might have had one last is about 7 yrs and that is also with it on a maintainer when parked
as for a recommendation
I have had good luck with Deka, West Penn batteries

]Deka Battery Terminals 1231MF - 12 Volt Commercial Service[
and pretty sure they make this same battery for NAPA< just NAPA sticks there own decal on things

NAPA Commercial Battery 18 Months Free Replacement BCI No. 31 1000 CCA
Part #: BAT 7234,
NAPA has them on sale now too! 20% off!

I also try and find the highest rating cold cranking amps models

But not sure on warranty on Deka's, I think there now only like a 12 month deal, where as I know some other brands have longer free replacement warranties , if that is important to you
I know some brands offer a 4 yr free replacement warranty on some models, NAPA used to have some but been a while since at all there batteries they still carry,
I looked
Advanced auto carries a decent battery too, that seems like a good one, not sure what warranty is, but there typically 2 or 3 yrs,
and , there are a lot of stores all over if you never need to replace

DieHard HD Battery Battery: 31T Group Size, 1000 CCA, 1190 CA, 185 Minute Reserve Capacity, Heavy Duty

one of these 3 would be my suggestion

You might check caterpillar they use a lot of group 31 batteries I have seen them run dead several times throughout their life span and still last 5 to ten years, heavy equipment sometimes set months then you jump them in the spring and you up and running.
