Hi, today was above zero so I plugged the 665 in for a hour and it started 2nd revolution, let it idle till the water temp was about 130 and went to use it. Under load moving snow it acted like it was running out of power and fuel so limped back to the garage and put more power service in. No help, went to town for 911 , no difference. So I disconnected the inline filter and was going to run it into a container but nothing came out when the key is on. It did make a pumping noise though. Took the filter off and it is not restricted, if I blow down the line into tank it bubbles in there. When I hooked up the filter again the pump runs for a few seconds and quits but only puts a tablespoon of fuel in the filter.
What I am needing to know is if the line is disconnected should that pump be putting out a steady stream? Is there a check valve in the tank? Thanks for any insight next step will be to take the pump out of the tank I guess.

By the way the guy at the parts store said everyone in town is having trouble because a tanker of the wrong fuel came in and all the stations got part of it. He said they can't keep up with the demand for 911. However I think my trouble may be the pump.

I see in the book the switch should be in the service position to run pump steady. will try that.

I see now that the pump is between the inline filter and the water separator so back outside again .
Interesting that the operators manual shows a bleed screw on the injector pump but the book I have does not. Must be the difference between a 665 and a 160.
Also found this info in the book.

IMPORTANT
: Do not store diesel fuel in galvanized

containers. Diesel fuel stored in galvanized
containers reacts with the zinc coating of the
container to form zinc flakes. If fuel contains any
water, a zinc gel may also form. The gel and flakes
will quickly plug fuel filters and may damage the
injector pump and injectors.

665 does have a bleeder at the injection pump. LS160/170 have a tube that connects to the injector bypass and then to the tank allowing any air to purge from the injection pump. I have both and don't feel one is better than the other. The pump should pump a generous stream of fuel with no restriction. There is no check valve in the tank all the valves are in the electric pump.

Thanks frogfarmer, can't do it today but I will disconnect the line where it goes to the injection pump and see how much it pumps. I have never had to bleed it or anything so I assumed the pump was in the tank.
I did see in the 160 service book that you are supposed to run #1 fuel when it gets below 40 degrees f . I didn't think straight #1 was good for a diesel and never used less than 50/50 1 and 2. If the problem doesn't go away I'll drain the tank next and refill with #1 although it is $5.29 a gallon here for #1.
My operators book is for the 665 but the service book is for 160-170 and every now and then there are little differences.

Fuel pump fixed. It took a while to figure out but someone had replaced the pump and the new one was not held tight in the body clamp which is also the ground. They had put a little aluminum tape in the clamp but that loosened up. So the trouble was the pump did not get full current and now the clamp is tight it works fine. When I bench tested it it ran great so it was a puzzle.

I cant remember on the 665 but I know the 170 has a ground wire in the harness for the pump. Is there a chance they failed to connect the ground and now it grounds through the frame? If the 665 does not have a ground to the pump I would add one.

I remembered wrong, the pump did have a ground wire which attached to the mounting bolt for the pump clamp. To begin with had very little flow from the pump outlet but after taking it off I saw it had good flow on the bench. I did take the new spin on filter off and flushed it out with 911 but I still think the ground was poor because after remounting it there was nice flow to the injector pump and when I put my finger over the hose it would build pressure. Runs fine now. Thanks for the help on this.

If you need a new pump you can go over to a autozone they have them there universal, they are the green ones that say diesel on them, I have one and it works great, and cheap.

thanks delly, I have to write that down somewhere. Did you resolve your starting trouble and is that what led you to buy a new pump? Mine seems ok now so it's one of those things where you aren't really sure what was the trouble.

The pumps can be intermittent but its rare. Normally when they start acting up its easy to tell. I would keep an eye on the pump. Naturally if they lose power or ground from loose connections it was just electrical.

Yes jery I did, the fuel was gelled, new filter and a bottle of 911 and in heated garage took care of it..I changed my pump out a couple years ago.
