I just acquired a 545 on a barter deal (I paint his '56 Dodge pickup and he gives me the 545). It's not running. He said he paid a guy to put a rebuilt injection pump and somehow messed up the timing so no go. First, before I put it on a trailer can you put it in a "free roll" position? Second, does anyone have clear directions on how to time the engine (Perkins 4 cyl diesel) and install the injection pump correctly? This is my first diesel skid. TIA for any suggestions/recommendations/directions...I'm not finding much information about this machine.

I rebuilt a Perkins diesel that had been disassembled by someone else and then left exposed to the elements somewhat for a few years. Even though they put the parts in plastic bags, the injectors had water damage and were junked. That casual treatment cost him about $1,000 5 years ago. I had only a basic manual and old retired friend (shop owner) pointing out in the book what's up next. I don't remember the particulars but it wasn't complicated and the engine fired right up. I think it's just properly align the timing marks. It's possible the gears require a little compensation to allow for meshing movement of the timing marks, then pushing it together again. I've got a lifetime of automotive work, but this was my first basket case Perkins (first Perkins ever). If I could do it, you can do it. Just get the correct manual and be sure the marks are correct. Timing mark in the correct phase on each gear, turn it over, check that nothings moved. I remember a pin or two for timing alignment on some diesel I was working on, either the Perkins or a Deutz. Happy wrenching and keep plugging at it.

The pin I referred to is a "special tool" that's only used for timing location and inserts in a bolt hole I think. It doesn't remain in the engine. I don't remember the dimensions or design. There may be a picture somewhere in a sales brochure. I vaguely remember it may have two diameters on the tool.
