The governor on a 1700 is supposed to be easy to tune (according to a recently deceased friend), but it's been a b***ch to me. A linkage broke on it years before I rebuilt it and it still ran fairly okay after I rigged it. I just learned to "play it by feel". After the rebuild with all the expected improvements and loss of oil leaks, it hasn't been a happy driver. The alternator belt rigging is probably the problem as it originally had a generator and tensioning is subject to fluctuation. I do have the pamphlet for instructing but having to fiddle with the linkages that can't be easily reached is a stumbling block. That and I don't really need to use it much is a factor. I like FordV4parts.com for parts and have had positive results dealing with them, above and beyond the normal interactions. They might can help advise. I'll get my instruction pamphlet next week when at the garage and help as much as that will. One thing I did learn was ethanol regular fuel is barely usable in my machine. I'm not sure what compression the 1700 has but after I learned to run premium it was always more dependable.
