Hi There I purchased an old but solid Mustang 1700 Skid steer, with no motor..... My mechanic friend is replacing the motor for me. He said based on the wear of the sprockets, the motor needs to drive in the reverse of the normal directions for motors. Is this the case? What direction does the drive shaft need to rotate as seen from the rear of the skid steer? Thanks in advance for your help! Cheers, Anthony from Oz

I thought it was quite rare for motors to run “backwards” most turn one way, but it is possible.
Hopefully someone with this machine can tell you for sure.
IF it does indeed turn that way, finding a motor can be harder. You can swap oump parts around to reverse the direction that they will operate.

Here is a photo to see the two directions: www.provideit.com.au/skidsteer/drivedirections.png Can someone with a Mustang(OMC) 1700 or John Deere 170 please have a look at their device and see whether it turns in direction A or direction B. Thanks ever so much. Cheers, Anthony from Oz

Sadly i don't know, hopefully someone with one can set you straight.
It looks like it's a mechanical drive instead of hydrostatic? If this is so, what happens if you move a steering lever forward and rotate the shaft, it should show you the direction the motor needs to turn to go forward.
