Brought home yet another m610. It had an obvious engine miss. A compression and leakdown test revealed a badly blown head gasket on the back bank. When the tin came off I discovered oil all over the cylinders and head, and the debris you'd expect mixed with it. I pulled the head and both cylinders look good and show no sign of pumping the oil. So my question is, any ideas where that dang oil came from? After this gets put back together and cleaned up I don't want it coming back. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Does it look fresh, or old, like it had been spilled there some time ago. It seems if it was an ongoing leak, it would show up in low oil levels and it would eventually run down the side of the engine and pool at the bottom. I've got the same engine, and should probably pull the shrouding and see if the fins need cleaned out.

It's possible the oil is spillage from someone putting oil in the cylinders thru the spark plug hole. The previous owner may have only ued the machine during the summer and put oil in the cylinders when it was stored which is what you are suppose to do for long term storage.

I would guess there was upwards of a quart of oil in the mess I cleaned out. Below the cylinders the oil/dirt mix was more than an inch deep, and the cooling air blast distributed it on and between the cylinders and across the head. It was enough to half fill a 3 lb coffee can with what I scraped off. It will be very clean before I fire it. Is it possible a previous owner overfilled the crankcase?

There are lots of possibiltys on where the oil came from(old leaks, overfilled, blowby or even a broken hose that spayed everything). Once you have it cleaned up and run it for a while any leaks should become visible.
