I have a 1971? m610 that the lifting power has petered out. rebuilt the lift cylinders but to no avail.anybody got any ideas?

Put a pressure gauge on one of the the auxillary fittings and see what the pump is putting out.
The 610 should have 1750 to 1800 psi.

I put a gauge on the aux. and the reading was between 1750 and 1800 psi. however, while holdind the valve open that psi quickly diminished. Is the problem in the valve? Im not a hydraulics guy but I think that if it were the pump the psi reading would not have been where it was.

Holding the valve open? you mean for the lift? if so, thats normal. When you activate a function, the oil is diverted to that section, so the pressure will not be available at the aux connection.
I wonder if there are anti-cavitation valves in the lift section. I know my 743 had another relief in the lift section to protect it from being over pressureized if a load was to fall on it. It should be screwed into the control block near where the tube lines from that section come out. Remember, each segment is seperate but with a common oil supply coming in. A problem with one function is limited to that section so look for the relief in the lift segment.
You mention lift is bad, what about tilt? can you hook the lip of the bucket under a load and curl it up and see if it has power?
