ok I think this has been answered before but I am unsure of the "piece" that may have broke. I was using my LS180 (4000hrs) and all of a sudden I lost all drive. Nothing I do can make it go forward or reverse and there is no hydraulic power at all to raise the boom or bucket. There is a grinding/ clunking sound coming from behind the seat. IT starts fine and does not smoke. Do I have a broken crank or a bad charge pump? Or do I have a bigger problem? I just got the machine and cleaned the gearboxes and did a full maintenance of filters, fluids, greasing and a neutral adjustment to stop the forward creeping. Thanks guys.

On the back of the bell housing cover where the hydro pumps are attached you will find a plate held on with two bolts right above the dipstick. Remove this plate and start the engine and see if the gears in the bell housing are turning. If not the bolts holding the center gear to the crankshaft may have sheared off. You should be able to go in through the hole and see if the center gear is loose.
If the gears are turning then you have two failures, the charge pump and the hydraulic pump. Since they both stopped at the same time I don't think this is what happened. One will usually fail and then the other.

Good call Mike, the gear doesn't turn and you can see how loose it is as it woobles inside. SO.... remove the neutralizer setup, remove the hoses, remove the hydraulic pumps and open up the back and replace the gears...is that what I am looking at doing? Not bad for having the machine long enough to run it 2/10's of an hour.

You will need to go deeper. You will need to remove the bell housing to get to the flywheel. I doubt the bolts just backed out, they are probably broken in the flywheel. Not a fun job removing them.

Well you were correct Mike.... the gear is smashed... bolts are broken off, and same for the hydraulic pump gears and shafts. Anybody got some LS180 parts they want to part with? Not bad for buying the machine and putting less than half an hour on it. And can anyone tell me why the crank gear is over $700?? I think I can get one made for less.

That's some shocking luck you have had. I hope you manage to find the bits needed at a reasonable price and have it up and running soon!

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you call the crank gear, but the center gear which bolts to the crankshaft, while not cheap, is not anywhere near 700.00. The part number for the gear is 86537619. What happened to the hydro pump shafts?

I am guessing they ran this low on gear oil.. the outside of the gears are chewed up.. the insides are almost missing all the teeth... its like its round... there is so much play on the shaft because the shaft is missing teeth too.. or they are worn down. The pumps themselves worked fine when the machine ran. I only have the prices of the gears from Messicks website and that is what they are showing for a gear price... $743... unless I am looking at the wrong thing.

Just an update on my machine..... new pumps were installed and everything is working fine. Learning a lot on this LS180 as things break. ugh

you do learn a lot when you do repairs, but hopefully they are not emergency ones that seem to pop up on a weekend after the shops are closed....
