I have a LS 180, when starting in extreme cold the drive stays locked up for about 5 minutes then the left side will work and 2 minutes later the right side will free up is there anything to prevent this or is it normal ? Is this just water in the drive, when it breaks free it has no problem or drag at all.

The parking brake is lubricated by the chain case oil. The oil must pass through a small hole in the gearbox housing. This small hole is encircled with a magnet to catch metal debris and keep it out of the gear box. Eventually the opening gets plugged with debris so there is no oil getting to the parking brake discs. When this happens water starts to condense in the brake housing. When it gets cold enough the water freezes the discs in place. To correct the problem you will need to remove the drive motors and disassemble the brake housing to clean it out and open the passage back up to the gearbox.

Can you get at it to warm it with a hair dryer? Whenever I see one at a garage sale for a dollar or so I pick it up for use like that. but you could probably fix the problem in a weekend.
