So here's an update, for future reference to anyone with this issue. There was nothing wrong with my alternator, other than the bearings were shot, I had it tested at AutoZone. Whoever had been into this thing before didn't really have an idea of how it all worked together. The schematics show that there is supposed to be a diode on one of the wires coming out of the alternator, it's really small on the schematics but it's there. This is required to "trick" the GM 2- wire alternator to charge the battery correctly and stop the alternator from draining the battery when it is turned off. Whoever was in there before, cut out the dang diode! There is a butt splice connector right there at the alternator plug. So I wired up my own idiot light with an led. THANK YOU laurencen for that little tid bit of info about the idiot light. If it wasn't for that, I'd be banging my head against a wall not understanding why a brand new alternator wasn't working. Now my bobcat starts and turns off with the key, actually charges the battery at 14.5V, and doesn't drain the battery when it's off.
