Short question:
Does anyone know if an alternator for a 71/72 Pinto is a drop in replacement? It is a Ford 1.6L Kent motor. It is a 3 wire alternator. Two wires in a 3 position plug, and the Batt wire terminal on the back.

Long story:
A few weeks back i purchased a 632. Runs pretty good, but didn't like only having the dummy light for engine temp. Considering there isn't much in the way of parts for this dinosaur. So i bought a coolant temp gauge for it. Wired it up.

Previous owner had a toggle switch to turn the ignition on then use the key to start it. He said that the battery would drain if I left the switch on. I knew it wasn't right, but the machine ran good and I just put that off as a project for a rainy day.

Well i hooked my gauge up to work with the toggle switch on, but as soon as I would turn the key on, my gauge would go blank. So I started digging into the wiring. Did you know that the dye they used in the wiring for a 40 year old Bobcat disappears, so now every wire is a white wire, yay! And then to top it off someone had cut out the plugs of the wiring harness between the rops and frame.

So after probably 8-10 hrs I traced all of the wiring out trying to figure out why my gauge would go blank and why did they have a toggle switch to stop the battery from draining. I don't know if the switch was faulty but the acc side of it would only work with the ignition off and the key turned to acc only. So I replaced it. Gauge worked but still had the battery drain. I ended up finding that the "batt" terminal on the alternator is creating a 4.5A drain. Now if I can just find a replacement that doesn't cost $175. The autozone near me can get an alternator for a 71/72 Pinto. Just don't know if it is a drop in replacement.

Thanks for any help you can give!

any time I have alternator issues I install a old GM alternator, easy to hook up and yes you have to add a idiot light I just put it by the alternator in the engine compartment, if you have a voltage gauge it will show if charging or not and they are cheap, at a wreckers 50 dollars tested

Thank you for the advise laurencen. Please forgive my ignorance, what is an idiot light for the alternator? Is it just something to put a draw on the alternator? And how would I wire in something like that?

Thanks

the idiot light was the light used to indicate the altenator was charging, on 1970 cars and trucks, you need the bulb to make the circuit for the altenator, I will dig up a diagram to show how its hooked up

I would love to get a copy of whichever one of those you think would be the closest to a 632. Although they may not be the exact model some of the systems are probably the same or very similar.

So here's an update, for future reference to anyone with this issue.

There was nothing wrong with my alternator, other than the bearings were shot, I had it tested at AutoZone. Whoever had been into this thing before didn't really have an idea of how it all worked together.

The schematics show that there is supposed to be a diode on one of the wires coming out of the alternator, it's really small on the schematics but it's there. This is required to "trick" the GM 2- wire alternator to charge the battery correctly and stop the alternator from draining the battery when it is turned off.

Whoever was in there before, cut out the dang diode! There is a butt splice connector right there at the alternator plug. So I wired up my own idiot light with an led. THANK YOU laurencen for that little tid bit of info about the idiot light. If it wasn't for that, I'd be banging my head against a wall not understanding why a brand new alternator wasn't working.

Now my bobcat starts and turns off with the key, actually charges the battery at 14.5V, and doesn't drain the battery when it's off.
