Hello, I have been lurking for some time, and have a couple of questions about an 82 skidsteer I recently purchased. It is a 642. It did not come with any manuals, and my questions may seem quite simple, but how do I check hydraulic oil in it? It has 2 plugs on the side of the tank, and I am guessing that I make sure that the level is at least up to the top one? I have a bit of a leak at the auxillary hydraulics that I have yet to adress. I am also looking for a wiring diagram if possible. It looks like the only temp sensor in the block may be wired to the idiot light? It is currently disconnected, and I am thinking about getting just a regular sending unit and temp gauge. Has anyone done this? If anyone has one of these or can offer some insight, I thank you in advance for the help.

I have a wiring dia. I will need your s# I will have to scan it and email.
You are correct for the hydraulic oil level. Screw the valve in and fill till oil starts to flow from the top one. Close it and you are rite.
There are multiple senders. You will have charge pressure and oil temperature wired to a light on the dash, you will also have engine oil pressure wires to a light on the dash, you will have a coolant temperature sender that is wired to a gauge on the dash as well.
The most impartant ones are the coolant temperature sender and gauge, make sure these work or you can cook your engine, also engine oil pressure.
Good luck working out the wiring and getting it back to how it should be.

I have a 642 of similar vintage to yours. Tazza is correct regarding the multiple idiot lights. If you are seated in the operators seat, the left idiot light is for low engine oil pressure. The right hand light goes on for multiple reasons....Low charge pressure, hydraulic filter change required and hydraulic fluid temp too high. I added an engine oil pressure gauge and a charge pressure gauge to my 642. These gauges operate along with the idiot lights. The more info the operator has, the better. If you need any info for your 642, just e-mail me, I have the service manual that covers most serial numbers and an owners manual that covers the basics for serial number 20001 and up. Regarding the hydraulic fluid level check, your serial number must be lower than mine, I have a hydraulic resivoir dip stick, no plugs.
Good Luck
Bernie
