I'm in the same boat and have not found any successful examples of replacement.
I say successful, because there is the work in progress below that some Aussies are working on. That post is a few years old.
I thought about importing a new 4JB1 equivalent from China as they are still made and used in Asia, but none that I've found meet EPA standards. The trading companies on Alibaba.com that sell them will happily take your money and you can get the engine to the US but your risk is that US Customs will not let you you take it out of the port. If Isuzu still made them, and what was currently sold was identical to our 4JB1, then it would be ok to import them. Unfortunately, "Isuzu" doesn't make them, but the joint-venture factories in China that did make them for Isuzu are the same factories producing the current (not-EPA approved) versions of the 4JB1.
I'm about to order an overhaul kit off eBay and rebuild what I have.
