Hey all, I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out. I was moving some dirt a few days ago, and the left side wheel or wheels locked up. I'm not sure if it affected one wheel or both, because I had a set of ott tracks on. When I pushed the handle forward, nothing happened. When I pulled it rearward for reverse, the motor hummed and the engine bogged down a little like it was trying to move.
We hooked a chain to it so we could pull it out of the mud to get a better look. While pulling it backwards, it made a popping sound, and the left side worked again. On the way to the barn, it locked up again. I used the bucket to pry it backwards, and it made the same popping sound then continued to drive. At that time, the high pressure hose going from the hydrostatic pump to the drive motor burst. I replaced the hose with a new one. It locked up a third time and the new hose also ruptured. It seemed to drive fine in reverse, so I continued on to the garage.
Once I got it home, I took the tracks off and power washed everthing, so I could get a clear look. The drive linkage was all intact and the parking brake was disengaged. The drive chains and sprockets all appeared fine, and the slack in the chain was a little loose but not horrible. The book states 1/4 in movement of tire rotation max. I had 7/16 on front wheel, and adjusted it back to spec. I blocked the machine up and shook the wheels trying to diagnose a bad wheel bearing. Everything felt tight.
My next thought is to take the brake assembly apart, and check the discs. If that appears fine, I'll move onto the gear box. I have all the repair manuals and exploded diagrams, but don't have any experience working on skidsteers. Is there anything I'm missing or any tips or tricks that aren't in the books? Thanks in advance for any help. Looking forward to figuring this out.
On a side note, I must be crazy, because I'm enjoying this a little.

When you start buying parts it will dampen your enjoyment of this though. Good luck with it , no rollers broken on the chains either?

No broken rollers that I could see. You do have me thinking though. I'll have someone move the wheels with the access panel removed, so I can watch the chain spinning. Might reveal something. I hear ya with parts buying. I'm enjoying it while I can. Probably won't be much longer. I did have a bit of a surprise when I had the new hose made. Twice.

If you are making hoses with regular 2 wire hose, you will be replacing it again soon. The relief valves of the hydro are set in excess of 4000 PSI. It sounds like you have gearbox problems if your chains check out OK.

When your checking your chains see if you lost a bolt some where and it is binding up your chain under a sprocket

The hose is rated for 5500 psi. I think it's a 4 wire. I ran a magnet around the inside of the chain case, and didn't pick up any metal pieces.

A magnet won't do much good if the object is in the chain. I had one get stuck in my chain and it dropped thru the hole by the rollers. Lot of nice words said about that until I found it. To this day I don't know where the bolt came from

Not sure if this would've caused my problem, or if it was a incidental finding. When I pulled the brake parts out of the gearbox, the spacer wasn't between the brake pad and actuator like it was supposed to be. It was stuck to the magnet in the housing. It also had a gouge on the edge like it was wedged against the hub splines or something. Also the pad was wore pretty unevenly. The thin side was well below 0.25 in thickness.
Anyway, gonna pay a visit to the local dealer to pick up some new parts and pick their brains.
